Most disappointing players in the 2010 World Cup
The 2010 World Cup was a weird one, even though in the end a favourite won it (Fuck you Spain but congrats). A lot of players came out big for their countries and a lot just didn’t show up. Below in order are the players who in my opinion didn’t do what they were supposed to.
- Wayne Rooney
- Robin van Persie
- Lionel Messi
- Fernando Torres
- Lukas Podolski
Let’s face it, Rooney sucked. I put him in first place because to me he was a big reason why England didn’t make it further in the tournament. He had his chances yet he couldn’t come through and score when they needed him to.
van Persie, van Persie, van Persie… I don’t know what to say. Rooney sucked, but van Persie SUCKED! He was just there barely running, being lazy, and being completely useless to the Dutch attack.I have no doubt that Holland would have won the game vs. Spain if he would have played to his potential.
Messi, who is supposedly the best player in the world, did nothing to impress me. Sure he’s been great for Barcelona but he was pretty much useless for Argentina. Another reason why I believe Germany beat them.
Torres was lucky his teammates David Villa and Andrés Iniesta were there to pick up the slack because there was no way Spain would have won today. If it wouldn’t had been for those two, Torres would have probably been in the first spot ahead of Rooney.
The only reason I put Podolski in my top five is because I’m a fan of the Germans and I was expecting a lot out of him. After seeing how he played in the ‘06 World Cup and ‘08 Euro Cup I only expected him to be better. People are supposed to get better with time, yeah?
See you in four years!First off I would like to congratulate the 2010 German squad on their third place finish.
After watching the game vs. Ghana where Germany won 1-0, I confidently said that this was the worst German team I’ve ever seen play. They only got better with time and right after that they beat England 4-1 and Argentina 4-0 before falling short to Spain 1-0 in the semi-final match. Do I still think they’re the worst German squad? No I don’t, but they’re definitely not the best. All I know for sure is that they will be a force to be reckoned within two years for the Euro Cup.
As always I have gained and lost respect for some players. Lets start with the latter.
-Özil: Other than that one goal he scored, he hasn’t impressed me at all. He holds on to the ball way too long and he doesn’t shoot enough. In years to come I no doubt believe he will be a great asset to the team, but right now I’m not convinced.
-Jansen: I remember watching him play in either World Cup ‘06 or Euro Cup ‘08 and liking what I saw from him but this year he hasn’t done anything for me.
-Podolski: It’s a real shame adding him to this list because he has potential to be one of those players every team fears. Even though he didn’t score as much as he did in ‘06 and ‘08 he still played quite well. I just wish he would have scored more.
Now for players I gained respect for.
-Klose: I never thought I’d love him more than I already did. The man can play and damn can he score. I’m real sad that he most probably wont be making the 2014 World Cup in Brasil.
-Boateng: Wow, I’m glad he decided to play for Germany and not with his brother in Ghana. He’s a great addition to this young team and I’m glad we’re not playing against him.
-Khedira: When they announced that Ballack wouldn’t be playing in the tournament I was quite worried to say the least. I didn’t think someone could replace him. Khedira surprised me and a lot of people. Not only did he do a great job at replacing Ballack but he also showed everyone that he’s capable of keeping up with the big guys and being their for the team when they need him.
-Müller: The kid is 20 years old. He scored 5 goals and had a few more chances where he could have also scored. He wont be missing those shots in 2012. I am pretty sure this guy will break Ronaldo’s record for most goals. It’s looking like Müller might be my new favourite player in the near future!
I’m excited to see what damage this team will do in the years to come. Bring ‘em on!
